Chops’ Magical List of Wonder Beers

It’s no secret that I’m an avid fan of craft beer. I love the stuff. Hell, just talking about it is making me want to bust one open. In fact … (brief pause for commercial break) … okay, that’s better. I’ve spent the better part of a decade honing my BrewChief persona, and because it frequently comes up in conversation, I get asked one question more than any other.

What, kind chief of brew, is your favorite beer?

My … favorite beer? That’s kind of like asking a musician what their favorite song is. It’s like asking a mechanic what their favorite car is, a sommelier what their favorite wine is, a clown what their favorite nightmare is. It’s an impossible question to answer because there are too many factors to consider. Hell, I’d have a hard time picking my favorite beer to consume on a weekday evening during winter in an even-numbered leap year. In short, it’s complicated.

Regardless, I like challenging questions. And while I could never narrow it down to a single brew, I think a living list of my 10 current favorite beers would come close to answering it. I will also update the list as time progresses. To be clear, this is not a ranked list, just a conglomeration of favorites. These are the beers I consume on a regular basis because they make my taste buds very happy.

1) Weihenstephaner Vitus (WebsiteBrewChief)

I love a good weizenbock and the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan crafts one of the best, if not the best.

2) Weihenstephaner Korbinian (WebsiteBrewChief)

My favorite beer style is the dopplebock. Malty sweet caramel explosion? Yes, please. Mmm … Korbinian.

3) Ayinger Celebrator (WebsiteBrewChief)

The best dopplebock on the planet. Fact, not opinion, although the opinion matches the fact.

4) Ayinger Bräu Weisse (WebsiteBrewChief)

Forget that Blue Moon garbage. Treat yourself to what a wheat beer is supposed to taste like.

5) Schneider Weisse Aventinus (WebsiteBrewChief)

A wheat dopplebock that blows my mind every time I have one. A contender for my all-time favorite beer.

6) La Cumbre Elevated IPA (WebsiteBrewChief)

As local brews go (Albuquerque), this is one of my favorites. Bold and bitter with a great citrus punch.

7) La Cumbre Slice of Hefen (Website)

A local wheat ale that I am always in the mood for. It has a great spicy flavor without being overbearing.

8) Santa Fe Happy Camper IPA (WebsiteBrewChief)

My go-to when I just need a good beer. It has a delightful earthy bitter flavor. I always have these in the fridge.

9) Marble Double White (WebsiteBrewChief)

On paper, this beer doesn’t make sense. A double white ale? But wow is it delicious (and dangerously strong).

10) Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (WebsiteBrewChief)

America’s quintessential Imperial IPA. When distribution reached New Mexico, I squealed like a schoolgirl.
